The bauhaus and its various effects upon art. Not merely by its educational methods of art teaching which it has developed as an academy of art did the Bauhaus (1919-1933) show the way ; also its influence upon architecture, painting and design was world-wide. Architects like Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer, Hannes Meyer, Ludwig Hilberseimer and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and painters like Josef Albers, Johannes Itten, Lyonel Feininger, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Georg Muche and Oskar Schlemmer belonged to the teaching staff of the Bauhaus. The integration of art into life and the merging of the artist into the industrialized society were their common goal. Some members of the Bauhaus were also concerned with the designing of toys. Materials which they preferred were wood and strong colours. The toy was meant to stimulate the inventiveness, it should create joy thus fulfilling a didactic purpose and contribute towards building up the imaginative faculty. Alma Siedhoff-Buscher designed her play-scheme in 1923. Not only houses may be built by putting together at will blocks of wood, but also ships and amusing little products of one's creation. Alma Siedhoff-Buscher did a splendid job, she also designed children's furniture. She was married to the actor and dancer Werner Siedhoff ( who worked with Schlemmer on the Bauhaus stage ) and she died during the second world war in Frankfurt in an air-raid.
